The Internet Archive (IA)

Digitization is moving inexorably forward. Libraries and museums are transforming into digital institutions, claiming a significant place on the Internet, and expanding their reach like never before.

The Internet Archive (IA) is one such library. Its website describes it as an internet library 'working to prevent the Internet - a new medium with major historical significance - and other "born-digital" materials from disappearing into the past. Collaborating with institutions including the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian, we are working to preserve a record for generations to come.'

Founded in 1996 and based in San Francisco, the Internet Archive includes texts, audio, moving images, and software as well as archived web pages. Some of its interesting sub-collections include the 'Film Chest Vintage Cartoons' a treasure trove of classic animated cartoons from the 1930s to the 1940s. For Betty Boop and Popeye fans, do visit this site. :)
